Rijul Gupta (b. 2000) is an artist primarily working with photography. He is a master’s student in Photography at the National Institute of Design, Gandhinagar. He writes this biography in the third person to fool readers into thinking he is cooler and more important than he actually is. However, now that the spell is broken, we can just drop it and use the first person.

I am a tremendously passionate darkroom printer. So much so that I often find myself daydreaming about becoming a Master Printer one day. Funnily enough, not so much immediately after seeing my actual prints. I also try to run a small film lab and darkroom called Negative Ghar in my hometown, Shimla.

My practice focuses on documenting India’s colonial past, particularly in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, exploring its history, tourism, and cultural transformations. I work entirely in analog mediums and also engage in archiving and bookmaking.

I have exhibited my work in group shows at the Lalit Kala Akademi in Delhi and Shimla, and have also led a Summer Art Camp on Photography and Video Editing at St. Edward’s School, as well as conducted workshops on Photography Basics at Himachal Pradesh University.
